METACyt and the Indiana Economy
Economic development is a broad goal of the METACyt Initiative. The initiative will focus on providing angel money for emerging life sciences companies that spring from Indiana University intellectual capital. This aspect is well underway, with the expectation that one or more new companies will be supported every year. In addition, by partnering with BioCrossroads and other state institutions, METACyt will create enduring research centers that will facilitate the growing life sciences revolution in Indiana. IU Bloomington is committed to playing a leading role in the state's effort to make this region the home of choice for new biotechnology ventures. Lastly the large amount of additional research funding that METACyt should generate will bring highly talented scientists and their families to Indiana, thereby growing our intellectual base, providing a boon for the local economy, and generating substantial new revenues for state and local government. As a result, the Lilly Endowment's generous gift will generate dividends for the whole state of Indiana.
